In China, there are only a handful of well‑known guardrail brands in the industry. Lacking independent brands, most guardrail manufacturers quietly engage in OEM or private‑label production for major foreign clients and purchasers. China’s young guardrail industry is gradually growing. China ranks among the world’s top in production capacity, yet there remains a considerable gap in terms of brands and core technologies. For the time being, the largest guardrail market is not located in China, but in the economically developed European and American countries. Having evolved over a century, their markets boast mature production technologies, sales channels, established brands and complete market standards, with a high degree of industrial sophistication. Although China’s domestic market is expanding rapidly, it is still immature by comparison.
Nevertheless, there is every reason to believe that China’s guardrail industry will enjoy prosperity in the future and become the world’s largest consumer of guardrail products. China’s real‑estate market surpassed that of the United States to become the world’s largest in 2011. The continuous advancement of municipal projects, transportation infrastructure, water conservancy projects and other initiatives will generate an enormous market demand for guardrail products. Accordingly, the number of domestic guardrail manufacturers keeps rising. Many enterprises underwent rapid transformation amid the financial crisis and intensified their efforts to develop the domestic market.
While providing OEM services for foreign customers, guardrail manufacturers have acutely realized that as a core link in the industrial chain, the profits they gain are embarrassingly disproportionate to their labour input. Characterized by high labour intensity, rising labour costs and increasing miscellaneous expenses, factories are left with negligible profit margins. With markets controlled and profits shared by others, how can their survival space not be a cause for concern? Faced with this situation, China’s guardrail industry must fully recognize its own shortcomings, improve the technical content of products, keep abreast of market trends, refine product quality, and build home‑grown industry brands. Brands serve as a cornerstone, enabling access to overseas markets and freedom from external constraints. Chinese guardrail brands will legitimately gain a foothold in foreign markets. This goal will surely be achieved in the near future. Despite twists and turns and numerous hardships, Made‑in‑China will surely live up to its mission.
